Frequently Asked Questions
It's natural you will have questions about Hypnotherapy, it's application, how it can help you get the results you need, expectations, etc.
Answers to the most asked questions can be found below.
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis (below) in the treatment of specific symptoms or health conditions. It works by inducing a hypnotic state marked by waking awareness that allows people to experience detached external attention and to focus on inner experiences. Read more about Hypnotherapy here.
Hypnosis is a state of mind we experience at different times during the day and is entirely normal. Think of daydreaming; not asleep but narrowed focus on a specific thought or suggestion. It is not sleep but that word is used as most people have come to use it to describe hypnosis so it is used for the sake of congruence. Whilst under hypnosis, Hypnotherapy is then applied to bring about the changes you want.
No. At all times you are in control of your body and mind. Whatever your beliefs and values would disallow in the normal waking-state, would be true, too, for you under hypnosis. Always. You cannot be induced to do something against your will.
Hypnotherapy sessions are carried out with transparency between you and me, in what is called the 'Therapeutic Alliance', meaning tasks, goals and outcomes are determined beforehand between us and carried out in a manner where you are in full control of yourself and what happens. There are no side-effects from Hypnotherapy unlike taking medication. You will be totally relaxed and benefit greatly from the behavioural/mind changes that come from successful Hypnotherapy.
No. At any time, you can simply choose to exit hypnosis
Most people can be hypnotised without problem and I am sure this includes you! Some people are more suggestible and may experience being able to go quicker into hypnosis than others, especially if they have been hypnotised before. If you don't want to be hypnotised, you cannot be. If you want to be, then there is little that will stop you being hypnotised and enjoying successful and lasting results from hypnotherapy.
This is often dependent upon what you are seeking hypnosis to deal with. Some issues may require 3-4 sessions whilst issues such as smoking cessation or anxiety may only require one or two. This will be discussed in our first session and we will work together to get the best result in the shortest time!
Hypnotherapy can be as effective in an online Zoom session as in a traditional setting of in-person therapy. I can do both but obviously geographic location might be a limiting factor. Online Hypnotherapy has greatly increased the ability of getting help easier and quicker from Hypnotherapists and you will get great results with me whether online or in-person. (Cornwall based)
No medical or therapeutic process gives definite guarantees. No health professional will guarantee outright 100% success. Hypnotherapy is the same and results may vary. All hypnosis is in fact self-hypnosis and requires you to be 100% committed to the process, in the same way I am totally committed to seeing you experience the transformation you seek. There may be certain conditions that are contraindicated but Hypnotherpay remains an effective path to healing for many today. Why not you!
There are very few risks in hypnosis. That said, some conditions may be contraindicated and therefore, hypnosis should not be used. Conditions include: pathological personality disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance-induced psychosis, epilespy, narcolepsy, heart disorders, suicidal tendencies or senility.
Conditions that are not explicitly contraindicated but may need consideration can include: pregnancy, depression, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, alcohol (do not be inebriated during a session). If in doubt, seek first the advice of a health professional or your GP. The above should be considered only as guidance not professional medical advice.
